A stroke changed our lives and we have made it our goal is to help people navigate this new normal in a way that is fulfilling and positive.
Welcome to Stroke to New Normal, STNN for short. In July 2021 Bob's stroke changed our world. With a lot of determination, hard work, support and love we have come a long way.
We hope this site can help you navigate the strange new world of Stroke Recovery.
Our Story
Life can change in an instant. For us, that moment came on June 5, 2021, when Bob suffered a massive stroke. Our lives were turned upside down, and we suddenly found ourselves navigating a world we had never imagined—one filled with hospitals, specialists, wheelchairs, walkers, and a whole new set of challenges.
We are Bob and Paula, and we created Stroke to New Normal to share what we have learned along our journey of stroke recovery. Our goal is to provide inspiration, advice, and practical tips to help stroke survivors and caregivers live their best lives. Whether you are just beginning this journey or are further along the path, we hope our experiences will provide support and encouragement.
My stroke came just two weeks after being diagnosed with congestive heart failure. The early days were overwhelming—I could not speak, sit up, stand, or even swallow. I spent a month in the hospital’s medical ward and another two months in a rehabilitation facility, working tirelessly with therapists to regain basic abilities. Through sheer determination, patience, and support, I relearned how to walk, talk, read, and write.
During those months, Paula juggled caregiving, managing the household, and maintaining her job as an elementary school principal. It was a crash course in caregiving, advocacy, and faith—lessons she never expected to need but quickly learned were essential.
Just as things began to settle, another challenge arose. In late November 2021, I experienced a series of seizures, leading to yet another hospitalization and a new layer of uncertainty. Through it all, we leaned on each other, our faith, and the incredible support of family and friends.
Recovery from a stroke is not a straight path; it’s a winding road with unexpected turns. We know how difficult, frustrating, and exhausting it can be. But we also know that recovery is possible, and life after a stroke can still be fulfilling and meaningful.
We started Stroke to New Normal as our “silver lining” to the challenges we have faced. Here, we will share:
Practical Tips for everyday living, from mobility aids to home modifications.
Emotional Support for both survivors and caregivers.
Caregiver Advice on managing responsibilities and practical tips.
Inspiration and Encouragement through our personal experiences.
If you or a loved one are navigating the aftermath of a stroke, we want you to know you are not alone. We hope this website becomes a place of support, learning, and encouragement.
Join us as we continue to embrace our new normal—one step, one challenge, and one victory at a time.
With hope and resilience,
Bob & Paula
